Hi.

I'm Cait Sherwood, a mixed-media painter who works into art journals.

I make art from the trash of the art I made before.

Week 35

Week 35

This felt like a big week for me.  I finally got back into my studio after a year of mainly working at a desk in my house.  I had let the studio go, and avoided cleaning it, which it desperately needed.  Then as the days and weeks went by it became a bigger and bigger hurdle in my mind, and I was avoiding it like no other.  Finally, enough was enough and this week I got back in there, cleaned the space, and reactivated it in my mind.

I threw away a bunch of old art that was never going to grow.  Some half-finished paintings that I keep around thinking I'll get back to.  Years have gone by, I've looked at that half-finished painting 100 times and never acted on it.  At some point it starts to be a vague drain on my creativity.  It felt so good, so healthy to just get rid of some of this old stuff.  Some of it I cut up to be reused, but some of it I said goodbye to.

With the space that my studio provides I was able to use paint in a less restrained way, so everything got coated in squeegee-ed layers of acrylic.

Also, I finally started some mixed-media paintings.  I have worked almost exclusively into books for the past year.  I will still be doing that, but now I am also trying to make some larger work for walls.

Here are some preliminary layers on 3 new pieces.  They are made of some paper ripped from some art journals of mine, and layers of paint and drawing into paint, etc, etc.  I will be adding some more layers.  But I am going to try to challenge myself to stick with some of it and not cover everything up!  I have a tendency to overwork things because I subconsciously avoid accepting them as finished pieces.

And, today is the day that I get to tell you that I am teaching for Wanderlust 2018!

I am very excited about this! It is a year long online mixed-media/art journaling course with lessons and tutorials from a ton of teachers.

Wanderlust is a whole year long journey - an online event offering you videos from 24 guest teachers and 2 resident teachers on a weekly basis (each one is full length, high quality and downloadable), access to the Wanderlust Community with a supportive and friendly atmosphere, where all of the classes are gathered.

It starts in January 2018, and my lesson for it will come out next summer, but you can buy it now (until December 31) at the early bird price. It's around $100, which saves you 20%.

I am really into taking online courses as well as teaching them. I think of them as a dependable source of inspiration and they add a lot to my life and practice.  I also love that you can take them at your own pace from your own home, yet you still get the artistic community with the other artists taking the course.

If you have taken online courses you already know this, but if you haven't, maybe give it a try and see how it feels to you.
