This winter I will be focusing deeply on generating my first solo show which will be hanging at Provenance Gallery in San Antonio, Texas this April-May. This is a huge deal for me! I have been looking toward having a solo show for a few years now. (Though I did have one show of just my own work at a coffee shop in 2011.) I had applied for a few shows to no avail, so I was beyond stoked when Stephanie Torres (artist & gallery owner!) reached out and invited me to exhibit.
I make art regularly no matter whether I am showing in a gallery or not. But I must say, it is such a fun motivator knowing that I have a show coming up. It makes me paint a lot more. It's pressure, but it's a very positive pressure. I feel so grateful for the opportunity. I feel ready and I want to do a good job!
I have begun to make work for the show--though I'm not starting from nothing as I have loads of drawings and paintings that I will probably incorporate into large mixed-media paintings.
My creative flow is very healthy and strong right now! So for the next season, Winter 2016, I am going to direct it all toward this gallery show. Here are some messes from the past year:
My work develops in an intuitive way so I can't really plan out the paintings. I know if I try to do that I will "fail" and end up with something completely different. I have some strong themes in my mind that I will be focusing on. As the work emerges over the next couple of months, I will be able to write about it more.
