Hi.

I'm Cait Sherwood, a mixed-media painter who works into art journals.

I make art from the trash of the art I made before.

January 12-16, 2015: Art Journal Every Day

Updating this blog every day feels somewhat unnatural.  For me.  But art journaling every day feels like the point of my life.  So that, I kept up.

I work in layers.  I love it, I love mixed media.  I almost feel more satisfied the more diverse materials I end up using.  Layers help a lot with the "there's no time!" thing.  Ten minutes at the end of the day, make a layer.  Usually during an art journaling session I make new layers on many different pages.  At some point, the page will feel balanced and resolved, that's when I tend to post a picture.  But,  it's finished-ness is a total illusion!

And the best is when I am NOT inspired, and i just scribble anything, paint any color, glue any random photos or cutouts or art trash on my desk.  Just do anything.  I say it's the best because it amazes me how often my uninspired work grows into something meaningful.

This is a "finished" page.  I might work on it more in the future, but here it is for now.  Gouache, water-soluble graphite, xerox, pen drawing.

Here are some process photos, before I think the page is "resolved."

The journal I'm using is full of old notes from a grad class I took.  So I covered it in white gesso, but you can still see some of the writing.  By the time I'm done the writing will likely be completely obscured.  All I did yesterday was glue down some photos (these are from my honeymoon in West Virginia) and paint some colors in response to those photos.  I glued a scrap of paper onto it too.  A lot of paper scraps I use are from gift wrap that I designed and screen-printed.

So, each day when I journal, I just kind of visually respond to whatever I've slapped down in days before.  It's easy, intuitive, and it feels so healthy to me.

This was just me and a pencil watching bad TV one night.  I think it looks just fine, but knowing me I will cover it in paint eventually.

Okay, hopefully I will keep up with the posts through the rest of January!
