I want to make art every day! I'm pretty close to it now, but days go by where I just do the day job thing. Since all of my creative endeavors begin in my art journal, this month I will commit to art journaling every day! The results will be posted here.
- I often draw crude squares when I don't know how to start in my journal. I use a pencil to trace a small wooden panel a bunch of times. I think of each small square as a painting, and having so many in front of me makes me very comfortable to take risks. It also lets me get ideas out of my head quickly. On the right you can see sketches I drew straight from my Tumblr. I didn't think hard about them. To me, it's just one step past looking. I find if I draw or paint whatever I think about or notice, I get ideas for other work.
- On the left is a computer print out of Peaceable Kingdom by Edward Hicks. My grandmother has a poster of this painting and I've always loved it. I painted her a small copy of it last year, and this is the reference image I used. As with a lot of things in this journal, I pasted it here instead of throwing it out.
- If something bothers me enough, I will go over it with gesso (a white painting ground.)
- As you will see, I don't care if what I paint looks like my subject. It simply doesn't interest me enough.
I will be updating each day of this month with new art journal spreads.
